For nesten et halvt århundre siden beskrev den norske antropologen Harald Eidheim hvordan etnisk identitet er sosialt stigmatiserende, og har forrang blant identitetsmarkører hva gjelder både kollektiv og individuell identitet – om den så er selvtilskrevet eller beskrevet av andre. I dag ser vi hvordan den hegemoniske frihetsideologien påvirker hvordan man forstår identitetskonstruksjon som noe som kan kontrolleres, kombineres, tilpasses i en uendelighet av variasjoner – litt som når man plukker ingredienser fra en salatbar – både på individuelt og kollektivt nivå. Gjennom å diskutere hvordan stigma, undertrykkelse og skam fremdeles preger kolonialistiske relasjoner i dag vil vi i dette panelet undersøke hvordan doble/ multiple identiteter bringer oss nærmere en forståelse av det 21. århundres identitetspolitikk, og hvordan helbredelse og forsoning forutsetter at man lytter til og søker å forstå både individuelle historier og kollektive opplevelser.   

Diskusjonen vil foregå på engelsk.

Britt Kramvig - Visuell antropolog og professor ved Institutt for reiseliv og nordlige studier, UiT Norges arktiske universitet.

Scott MacKenzie – Film- og medieviter ved Queens University, Canada, og spesialiserer seg blant annet på film fra Arktis.

Moderator – Brigt Dale er statsviter og visuell sosialantropolog, ansatt ved Nordlandsforskning, som bidrar til kunnskapsutvikling for samfunns- og næringsliv.

Denne dokumentaren er filosofisk «roadmovie», der vi følger visuell antropolog og nordlending, Britt Kramvig, på reise i Finnmark, der hun hører historiene til folk som bor der, og hun gjør seg tanker om hvor vi kommer fra, og hvor vi går hen her nord.

Denne dokumentaren følger regissørens personlige familieliv; hennes Argentinske mann, seg selv fra Tromsø, og deres datter.

Almost half a century ago, The Norwegian anthropologist Harald Eidheim captured the sentiments of the time with his understanding of ethnic identity as a social stigma, as a signifier of individual and collective identity – as both a burden and a blessing, but nonetheless as a given. Today, as ethics of individual choice and freedom are promoted and provided hegemony, identities (in plural) are often described as something that can be moulded, created, manipulated, controlled and combined in a myriad of ways – much as ingredients in a salad bar – both by the individual and the collectives these individuals ascribe to. Through discussions on how stigma, repression and shame still prevails in colonialist relationships today, this panel will seek to investigate how knowledge about dual (or multiple) identities – both ascribed and inscribed – can provide a better insight into the politics of identity in the 21st Century, and how healing and reconciliation necessitates that both individual stories and collective experiences are heard.

Britt Kramvig - Visual anthropologist and professor at the Institute for Tourism and Northern Studies, UiT Norwegian Arctic University.

Scott MacKenzie - film and media expert at Queen's University, Canada, and specializes in, among other, film from the Arctic.

Moderator - Brigt Dale is a political scientist and visual anthropologist, employed by Nordlandsforskning, contributing to knowledge for society and business.

Where we reach the limit of our own existence and through this can go home through the night, through the dream where for us we will find peace and can live with our own turmoil.
This documentary is a philosophically "road movie", where we follow the visual anthropologist and northern Norwegian, Britt Kramvig, traveling around the most northern part of Norway, Finnmark, where she listens to stories of people who live there, and she ponders on where we come from and where we are going, up here in the north.

Nomadism becomes a general trait of the liquid modern man, as he flows through his own life like a tourist: changing places, jobs, spouses and values. A mind-set with an emphasis on shifting rather than staying - which can make a subject prisoner of it's own existential creation.
This documentary follows the director's personal family life; her Argentine husband, herself from Tromso, and their daughter.

Mixing archival footage, re-enactments and animation, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ poetic and poignant documentary BIHTTOŠ (Sámi for rebel) explores how past injustices impacted the marriage of her mother, who is of Blackfoot Native American descent, and her Sámi father.
