Grønlands revolusjon startet med et rockeband

Den første internasjonale full lengde dokumentarfilmen fra Grønland omhandler landets opprør etter 250 års koloniundertrykkelse. Og det var et rockeband som fikk det til å skje. Å høre Grønlands første rockeband synge på morsmålet våknet folk opp. SUMÉ's tekster introdusertr ord som "undertrykkelse" og "revolusjon" på Grønlandsk, og inspirerte politiske figurer til å ta Grønland’s politikk ut av hendene på danske politikere.

Nå, 40 år senere, ser denne filmen tilbake på opprøret på 1970-tallet og Sume’s innvirkning på grønlandsk historie. Gjennom intervjuer gjort i dag og unike arkivopptak gir filmen liv til en historie om et urfolk’s kamp for sin egen stemme og kulturelle identitet. En historie som blir stadig mer relevant i dag, som Grønland debatterer full uavhengighet fra Danmark, mens internasjonale konsern pusher for å utnytte det arktiske landets nasjonale ressurser.

Greenland's revolution started with a rock band

The first international feature documentary film from Greenland deals with the nation's uprising after 250 years of colonial suppression. And a rock band that made it happen. The sound of Greenland's first rock band singing in their native tongue woke people up. SUMÉ's lyrics introduced words like "oppression" and "revolution" to the Greenlandic language, and inspired the political figures of the time to take Greenland's policies out of the hands of Danish politicians.

Now, 40 years later, this film chronicles the uprising of the 1970's and Sumé's impact on Greenlandic history. Through present day interviews and unique archival footage the film brings to life a story of an indigenous people's fight for their own voice and cultural identity. A story which is becoming increasingly more relevant today, as Greenland debates full independence from Denmark, while international corporation push to exploit the arctic nation's national resources.
