HC Gilje er invitert av kurator Ida Lykken Ghosh til å lage årets bestillingsverk til AMIFF. Verket heter The intimacy of strangers og har premiere på åpningen av AMIFF 13. oktober. Verket vises også i et eget filmprogram med utdrag av andre verk av HC GIlje, etterfulgt av en samtale mellom Gilje og kurator Lykken Ghosh, fredag 14. oktober.

The intimacy of strangers er et verk laget for AMIFF som utforsker de mikroskopiske landskapene til lav som lever på en stein i steingjerdet rundt Trondenes Kirke.
Utover de ekstreme variasjonene i utseende, tekstur og farge, har lav blitt kroneksemplet for en ny biologiforståelse som utfordrer ideen om individet og supplerer evolusjonsteorien. Lav eksponerer også grensene for menneskets kunnskap, noe som er utforsket hos tenkere som Alexander Bogdanov, Lynn Margulis, Donna Haraway og Merlin Sheldrake.
Lav spiser stein. Gjennom en prosess som kalles forvitring vokser laven inn i steinen og injiserer sterke kjemikalier. Slik utvinner den mineraler som deretter blir en del av økosystemet (og kan til og med ende opp i kroppen din). Når lav dør blir de til det første næringsrike jordlaget. De eldste kjente lavartene er 9000 år gamle.
Det mest slående er at lav ikke er én organisme, men en symbiose av flere organismer fra ulike riker: Hovedsakelig en sopp som slår seg sammen med en organisme som driver fotosyntese, bestående av enten alger eller bakterier.
I evolusjonssammenheng, når en gren på livets tre vokser ut fra en annen, betyr dette at en ny organisme med litt andre egenskaper har utviklet seg fra modergrenen. Det som skjer med lav er at grener fra helt ulike deler av treet konvergerer, eller vokser sammen, og får et helt nytt sett med egenskaper.
Filmen er laget ved hjelp av en datastyrt mekanisk plattform og et digitalt mikroskop som kombinerer nesten 50 000 mikroskopbilder til miniatyrlandskap.

Under festivalen kan man ta seg en tur til Trondenes og se på steinen i steingjerdet.
HC Gilje har beveget seg mellom installasjon, eksperimentell video, live performance og scenografi siden han gikk ut fra Kunstakademiet i Trondheim i 1999. Gilje er opptatt av utforskning, hovedsaklig gjennom store installasjoner, sansning av forandring og transformasjon av fysiske strukturer (rom, landskap, objekter, kropper) gjennom flyktige media som lys, projeksjon, lyd og bevegelse. Gilje har laget flere større offentlige bestillingverk, bl.a til bybanen i Bergen.

The artist HC Gilje has made the comissioned work for AMIFF 2022. Curator is Ida Lykken Ghosh, director of Atelier Nord in Oslo. The work is called The intimacy of strangers, and will premier at the opening event of AMIFF 13 October. The work will also be screened as part of a programme of previous work by HC Gilje 14 October, with a conversation between the curator Ida Lykken Ghosh and the artist.

The intimacy of strangers is a work that explores the microscopic landscapes of the lichen living on one rock in the stone fence around Trondenes Kirke.
Apart from the extreme variations in appearance, textures and color, lichens have become the poster organisms for a new biology which challenges the idea of the individual and supplements the theory of evolution. They also expose the limits of human knowledge, something explored in the writings of Alexander Bogdanov, Lynn Margulis, Donna Haraway and Merlin Sheldrake among others.
Lichen eat rock: Through a process called weathering they grow into the rock and inject strong chemicals and mine it for minerals that then becomes part of the eco system (and might end up in your body at some point). When lichen die they become the first nutrient-rich layer of soil on new land (and the oldest dated lichen is 9000 years old).
The most striking thing is that lichen is not one organism, but a symbiosis of several organisms from different kingdoms: Mainly a fungi that partners up with a photosynthesising organism (either algae or bacteria). In the context of evolution, when a branch diverges from another branch on the tree of life this means that a new organism with slighly different traits have evolved from its parent branch. What is going on with the lichen is that branches from completely different parts of the tree converge, or grow together, acquiring a completely new set of traits.
The film was created using a custom made computer-controlled mechanical stage and a digtital microscope combining almost 50 000 microscope still images into miniature landscapes.

“For over a decade I have been working with a general idea arching over my various projects, called Conversations with Spaces, where I look at different ways of transforming spaces using light, projection, sound and motion: ephemeral media that create temporary transformations of physical spaces, which in turn influences how we experience these spaces. Questions of how we live our lives through our bodies, how we place ourselves in time, how we relate to others and our environment, and how technology is deeply entangled in the answers to these questions are an important context for the creation, and possibly appreciation and understanding, of my work.
I am interested in how motion passes through spaces, objects, bodies and landscapes. I am interested in how light interacts with physical structures. Light is only visible as manifestations in materials through reflection, refraction and shadows. Movement of light in a space affects the experience of time passing. My work has always revolved around different forms of improvisation, when working with a camera, in live performance, when creating material for experimental video and when working with spatial installations. For this I develop tools and devices that become instruments, mediators, probes or interfaces that allow me to interact with or have a conversation with my surroundings.” - HC Gilje
