James S. Lee
James S. Lee is an artist, curator and producer based in Tromsø, Norway. He currently works for Tromsø Kunstforening in a variety of roles, including as a technical and creative producer.
He graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, Scotland in 2010 and, from 2012 until 2015, was one hand of many on the steering wheel of the artist-led space, GENERATOR Projects, located in Dundee, Scotland. Throughout 2016, he was Curator in Residence with David Dale Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland.
Before moving to Norway in 2018, he worked for WASPs (Workshop and Artists Studio Provision Scotland Ltd.) as a Gallery Coordinator and was active as a freelance curator. One of the many projects he undertook as a freelance curator, was an exhibition mixing archival documents and contemporary works responding to the play "The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil".
After moving to Tromsø, he has been active as an art critic and writer, and between 2018 and 2022, he was programming environmentally conscious Art with 'F.U.C.K' (Failure. Understanding. Care & Kunst), an independent visual art project in Tromsø, Norway, in collaboration with artist Ruth Aitken.
He is fascinated by how art can or does operate politically. He is engaged at present in wanting to find ways and modes of operating within the "art" system that can build community, and contribute to a more fulfilling and sustainable cultural landscape for all.
